Development Banks Must Prevent Forced Displacement

In the June issue of the newsletter, Aleena Anand explores complaints to IAMs involving involuntary resettlement, noting two patterns: 1) breached resettlement agreements and 2) forced displacement through coercive or other violent means. The article examines the unsettling frequency of complaints mentioning physical displacement in conjunction with violence, suggesting that development banks must do more to prevent forced displacement going forward.

DFC Expands Suspension and Debarment Rules to Cover Environmental and Social Harm
The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) recently expanded its rules governing how it can restrict support of bad actors. DFC may now “debar a person or entity for refusing to engage in efforts to remediate identified environmental, social, and human rights harm stemming from their activities, including harm that may be identified through a DFC Office of Accountability complaints process.”
