Noteworthy updates on Bank and IAM policy and practice
Guide published for new mining industry accountability mechanism that applies to Chinese companies
Accountability Counsel and Inclusive Development International developed a guide that helps explain what to expect from the new Mediation and Consultation Mechanism for the Mining Industry and Mineral Value Chain. In May 2023, the China Chamber of Commerce of Metals, Minerals & Chemicals Importers & Exporters and the Responsible Critical Mineral Initiative published Procedures for a new mechanism that allows affected individuals to file an application alleging that a company in the mining and mineral value chain has not complied with environmental and social standards and seek redress for negative impacts. Notably, this is the first grievance mechanism applicable to many Chinese corporations engaged in the mining and mineral sectors.
AfDB solicits comments on how clients should implement its new safeguards
Now that the African Development Bank has finalized its new Integrated Safeguards System, it is developing Guidance Notes to help clients understand and implement its new environmental and social requirements. AfDB is soliciting recommendations for the Guidance Notes until July 15. Accountability Counsel calls for the Guidance Notes to address how clients should inform communities about all available grievance mechanisms, and how they should co-design remedial measures for project harms with affected people.
