The State of Remedy at the EBRD

In this month’s newsletter, Policy Associate Megan Pearson examines the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development's (EBRD) approach to remedy, shedding light on both the existing remedy gap in practice and within the draft Environmental and Social Policy (ESP). Through data analysis of IAM complaints about EBRD projects, the article highlights the pressing need for a more robust commitment in the ESP to addressing harm at the EBRD.

With the release of the new draft Environmental and Social Policy, we look at outcomes data from the EBRD to evaluate whether remedy has been provided when its financed projects cause environmental and/or social harm. The remedy gap we observe indicates that the Environmental and Social Policy should contain stronger commitments to address such harm.
