Exploring Accountability Mechanisms
July 2021
In this month's edition of the Accountability Console Newsletter, we explore the information available on Independent Accountability Mechanisms in the Console. The IAMs section has information on all the complaints filed to each accountability mechanism, but did you know that you can also compare over 200 policies across mechanisms, and see the distribution of sectors, issues, and countries of each mechanism's complaints? Research Director Samer Araabi explains the options available to compare Independent Accountability Mechanisms on the Console.
What's New
Updates to Console data, features, and functionality
- Responsive Design: Improvements to site display and interactivity on mobile screens.
- New Newsletter Archive: All previous newsletter editions are available on the newsletter archive page.
- Improved Complaint Filters: Complaint filters can process a broader set of inputs with clearer outputs.

Is the Console available in different languages?
The Console can be translated into just over 100 different languages using Google Translate functionality built into the Console. To select a different language, click the "Select Language" dropdown at the top of any page on the Console.
On the complaints 'visualize' page there is a graph showing the length of eligible complaints. Is there similar data on the length of time between filing a complaint and when the IAM deems a complaint eligible?
There isn't currently a way to get the length of ineligible complaints automatically; the best way would probably be to request an export of complaint data and compare "Filing Date" with "Eligibility End" while filtering for "Is Eligible" = FALSE. On average an ineligible complaint takes 84 days to process, through that number varies widely by mechanism; for some it's as low as 14 days, for others, the average time to each ineligibility is almost a year!
