Investigating Dark Spots in Accountability

In the April edition of the Accountability Console Newsletter, we tackle some big issues that are able to be addressed for the first time using the Console’s data and analytics.

Using the Accountability Console complaint map, Console users can easily pinpoint where in the world communities have brought complaints to IAMs. But what about the blank spaces on the map, where there are little to no complaints filed? Is harm not occurring, or are opportunities for remedy simply not present? Research Intern Sara Lowe investigates these “dark spots” and what they mean for communities seeking remedy in this month’s research piece.

For our feature spotlight, Research Associate Marisa Lenci walks through the IAM Benchmark Report, where Console users can access and compare over 200 IAM operating procedures. While Independent Accountability Mechanisms across the world have a shared purpose of bringing accountability to international development, no two mechanisms are exactly alike. Knowing the requirements and procedures of an IAM can mean the difference between a community accessing redress and being left empty handed.
